For over a century Appuldurcombe House was the finest on the entire island. The building we see today was started by Sir Robert Worsley in the early 18th century, and additional work was completed in the late 18th century by Sir Richard Worsley
Set in over 10 acres landscaped by Capability Brown, the house still gives visitors a feel for the impressive baroque architecture, even though it is now a shadow of its former glory.
After the house was used as a hotel, a school and a residence for exiled monks the property was neglected. By the 1930’s the house was falling into disrepair and during the Second World War a bomb exploded nearby, which increased the deterioration.
The house is extensive with many grand rooms to explore. There is also an owl and falconry centre with a playbarn, on the site.

Opening Times – The site is open 10am-4pm, Sunday to Friday, from April until October. The house is closed from October until April. Please see here for more details.

Dogs – Dogs on leads are welcome.
